Democracy

Democracy is always a work in progress. At the heart of this project is a lively debate among the diverse democratic stakeholders: citizens, politicians, public authorities, political parties, NGOs and Trade Unions. All of these types of stakeholders can already be found in Indonesia and they contribute their share to the vibrant Indonesian democracy. FES supports democratic policy dialogues and processes together with partners from all these domains. To organize and communicate these dialogues, processes and its outcomes, the media play a crucial role as a constitutive element of democracy.

Yet, like in every democracy around the world there are certain interest groups and stakeholders who are in a more favorable position to promote their interests by means of financial and political power. Other groups face serious problems in articulating and pursuing their interests due to a lack of resources and education. Socially marginalized and deprived groups nevertheless have their part to play in democracy. In its support for democracy FES especially focuses on the political empowerment of these disadvantaged groups. The aim is to contribute to an Indonesian society that is not only democratic but also lives up to the pretensions of social justice. That means we stand for a social democracy that combines the civic and political rights with social, economic and cultural rights on an equal basis.
