In a democracy the media fulfill a central function. Besides being a primary source of information dissemination, they facilitate dialogue processes between the different segments of society and make these processes transparent for the general public. Yet, these tasks are quite challenging. Nowadays the media sector apart from its public functions is first and foremost a vast field for business activity. Newspapers, TV and Radio Stations have to compete in a highly challenging market and have to serve the demands of their audience. Both of these framework conditions endanger quality journalism since companies may be highly tempted to trade off quality for quantity - accompanied by poor working conditions for journalists - and provide a mostly apolitical entertainment program.
FES in its media work follows a two-pronged approach: On the one hand FES tries to empower its partners from the media sector to advocate policies that are conducive to quality journalism and a media sector that is supportive for the Indonesian democracy. On the other hand FES together with its partners provides trainings and capacity-building in FES fields of work. For example concerning the broader issue of democracy there are seminars on fair election reporting; where Trade Unions are concerned, there is an award for media coverage of trade union issues and in the field of conflict resolution and security sector reform there are trainings on media coverage of the process of security sector reform in Indonesia.
